Birth Stories

Prenatal Classes
We recognize that today, people are very busy and may not be able to commit to the traditional 6-8 week series of prenatal classes. While we do occasionally offer classes spread across 6 nights on consecutive weeks, we realize that most people cannot commit to this number of days. So, we offer a unique service in the Durham area: two-day prenatal series offered on weekends. We offer both single weekend (Saturday + Sunday) classes, and two weekend (2 consecutive Saturdays) classes for busy parents to be.

This two full-day prenatal class series contains the same content normally taught over our 6 weeknight classes.

We purposefully set small class sizes to maintain the quality of the instruction and to facilitate meaningful interactions with our participants.

Class Goals
The primary goals of this course are to provide couples with the knowledge and motivation they need to advocate for their childbirth health decisions and to provide care for their newborn child. This is supported through

  • Helping women realize their inherent abilities to give birth
  • Helping women to realize that giving birth is normal and natural
  • Providing current evidence-based knowledge on childbirth procedures and outcomes
  • Helping couples understand their childbirth options and their role in the childbirth decision-making process.
  • Teaching couples how to communicate their childbirth decisions to healthcare providers through verbal and written means
  • Providing women with the skills they need to deal with birthing pain using both non-pharmacological and pharmacological options.
  • Providing information on past-partum parenting and baby care.

What to Bring?
Classes are usually taught in the Lakeridge Health Port Perry hospital's Education Resource Centre. It is also recommended that participants pack a lunch.

Participants should also:

  • Bring one or two pillows
  • Bring a mat (yoga mats are ideal), blanket or towel to use when laying on the floor for labour rehearsals
